November 08 | Women's Basketball
AKRON - The University of Akron women's basketball program announced the signing of three players for the 2001-02 season today, the first day of the early signing period. Guards Lindsay Hemmelgarn (New Weston / Versailles), Celina Dopoulos (Strongsville) and forward Cydney Overton (Hamilton / Badin) will join the Zip squad next fall after outstanding high school careers.
Hemmelgarn is a 5-8 1-2 guard from Versailles High. As a junior, she averaged 11 points and 5.3 assists per game, and was a first-team all-league, county and district pick. As a sophomore, she led her team to a sectional and district championship, as well as the regional runner-up spot. In the classroom, Hemmelgarn is ranked No. 1 in her class with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
"Lindsay lives for defense," said Akron head coach Roxanne Allen. "Additionally, she's a tremendous three-point threat and is very good off the dribble."
A 5-8 point guard, Dopoulos earned First-Team All-Poineer
Conference honors last season at Strongsville High. Averaging 14
points, 5 assists and 3.5 steals per game, she also was an

"Celina is like the 'Tasmanian Devil' on defense," Allen said. "She is lightening-quick, has good hands and anticipates very well. Her shooting touch adds to her ability to be an offensive threat."
A 6-2 post player, Overton will be a player to look to in the future as the Zips graduate All-MAC center Cheryl Bowles after this season. As a junior, her Badin High team went 23-5 and was the Division II state runner-up. Overton was an Honorable Mention All-Butler County pick as she led her team in rebounding with an average of six boards per game. She also was third in scoring average at seven points per game and is a 45% shooter from the floor.
"Cydney will be a great addition to our program," Allen said. "Her size and versatility will make for a smoother transition into a Bowles-less Zip team. She faces the basket well and is a solid defender."
The 2000-01 Zips close out their exhibition season on Monday., Nov. 13, with a game against the Ohio Girls Basketball Magazine All-State team. The Zips open regular-season play on Friday., Nov. 17, at Maryland-Eastern Shore.
