Orlando Gonzalez, who has known Hanna for more than 20 years, enters his first season as an assistant coach at Akron in 2015. He spent the last two seasons as the head volleyball coach and associate athletics director at Wesleyan College where he was responsible for the re-vitalization of the school's volleyball program.
Prior to taking the reigns at Wesleyan, Gonzalez had six years of head coaching experience, serving three-year stints at NCAADivision I member Rutgers University and Division II member Michigan Tech. Gonzalez also logged three years of assistant coaching time at the collegiate level and 11 years of club and scholastic team leadership.
During his tenure at Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights registered the second highest team grade-point average in the Rutgers athletics department. At Michigan Tech, he led his team to the 2009 NCAA Tournament while mentoring six All-Conference selections and nine All-Academic honorees.
Prior to joining Wesleyan, Gonzalez served one year as the assistant coach at Division I Kennesaw State. Gonzalez was the assistant coach at Northwood University in 2008, helping the team to its first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 2008.
Additionally, Gonzalez has served as the master head coach and regional coordinator of USA Michigan Volleyball (club) for 10 years.
Gonzalez is a graduate of Michigan State University, earning a bachelor's degree in communications and advertising in 2003.
Gonzalez is married to the former Carrie Jaeck, who began her playing career at Florida helping the team to the SEC and two appearances in the NCAA final four. She then transferred to Maryland for the final two years of her career, helping the Terrapins to an ACC title. She served as an assistant volleyball coach at the D1 level for 10 years. The couple has two daughters--Makenzie (13) and Graciela (6).
