THE NEXT LEADER OF OUR MEN’S SOCCER PROGRAM …
Yesterday, we proudly announced that Associate Head Coach Jared Embick will succeed Caleb Porter as head coach of our Men's Soccer program. Please join me in congratulating Jared on this well-deserved opportunity.
When Caleb announced in August that he will be leaving us after this season for Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers, Jared immediately expressed his interest in taking over. Of course, we’ve been able to watch – and appreciate – his coaching abilities for awhile. As Caleb’s right-hand man since 2007, he has been key to our becoming the most dominant program in college soccer over that time. In addition, because of Caleb’s national team commitments, Jared had the opportunity to run the program this spring, which provided a unique opportunity to see how he would handle the head coaching position.
You’ll hear more about and from Jared after the season when he officially takes over, but he – like Caleb and our team – is solely focused right now on pursuing our second team national championship.
Our team is ranked third in the country and now sits 10-1-2 with a 7-match winning streak, thanks to a 1-0 victory Tuesday over Michigan. Please join us for our next match, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field when we host new MAC rival West Virginia (and yes, you read that correctly, West Virginia is in the MAC for men's soccer). Tickets are available here.
SPEND YOUR WEEKEND WITH THE ZIPS …
Men’s Soccer isn’t the only show in town this weekend. It will be busy on campus with Football, Men's and Women's Soccer, and Volleyball all competing at home.
The action begins on Friday at 7 p.m. when Volleyball faces Eastern Michigan, then at 7:30 p.m. Women's Soccer kicks off their Senior Night against Western Michigan.
Football takes on Northern Illinois on Saturday at noon in a game that will be televised regionally by ESPN.Volleyball faces Central Michigan at 5 p.m., and nationally-ranked Men's Soccer hosts West Virginia at 7:30 p.m.
Also on Saturday at 4 p.m. we will host a Basketball Open House in Rhodes Arena, where you can meet our men's and women's teams, pose for pictures and get their autographs, grab a free slice of Papa John’s Pizza (while supplies last) and choose your seats for season tickets. Men’s Basketball ticket sales are tracking toward an all-time high, so if you don’t yet have your season tickets, please walk over to the JAR after the football game to select the best available seats. For those of you who already have ordered, season tickets will be mailed early next week.
Saturday is also Family Day on campus and a Fall Visit Day for prospective students.
The weekend wraps up on Sunday with Women's Soccer taking on Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m.
