AKRON, Ohio – Frida Fougberg (Partille, Sweden), a senior on the women's golf team, was named the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by The University of Akron, Ohio's Polytechnic University.
On Thursday, Oct. 15, Fougberg was selected as the Mid-American Conference Women's Golfer of the Week. She earned her second-career conference award after posting a win at the 2015 MAC Fall Preview on Oct. 11-12. Fougberg achieved the highest finish of her career, shooting a 221 (+5) 54-hole total while securing a pair of Akron women's golf records – Fougberg's first MAC award was earned on Sept. 11, 2014 after a second place showing at the Golfweek Program Challenge.
At the MAC Fall Preview, Fougberg accomplished career-best performances while rewriting the Akron women's golf record book. Initially, Fougberg carded a 3-under par 69 round with 13 pars and four birdies. Her score marked the first time in the program's history a women's golfer finished under 70 strokes, and as a result, Fougberg set the all-time Individual Best Round scoring record. The momentum continued in the second round as she collected eight pars and five birdies en route to an even-par 72 score. The two-round total of 141 (-3) stands as the program's best two-round performance ever, replacing the previous mark of 144 (E) set on Sept. 22-23 by Kristen Hill.
In four tournaments this season, Fougberg finished in the Top 25 three times while just missing the mark in the other event. She posted the Zips' lowest scores in each of the first two tournaments, the Mary Fossum Invitational and the Johnie Imes Invitational, where Akron placed eighth and ninth, respectively. Fougberg finished 22nd overall with a 54-hole score of 248 (+32) at the Mary Fossum and followed with a 29th place finish at the Johnie Imes with a 220 (+4) score. The Zips won Roseann Schwartz Invitational, and Fougberg finished second with a 147 (+3) 36-hole total behind teammate freshman Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) with a 146 (+2) performance.
Furthermore, after 11 rounds and 819 strokes, Fougberg holds a team-low 74.45 18-hole average with a season-low 220 stroke 54-hole total (The Johnie Imes Invitational).
The MAC Fall Preview concluded the Zips' fall season, and Akron will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 8-9 in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. for the Mid-American Conference Match Play Challenge at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.
