Zips Fall To Bowling Green in Five Sets

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Akron volleyball team grabbed an early two-set lead, but couldn't hold on and lost 3-2 (25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 19-25, 10-15) to the Bowling Green Falcons on Saturday.
The loss dropped Akron's record to 15-12 overall and 8-8 in MAC action.
The Zips attack was paced by Delaney Gash, who finished with 16 kills on the day, and by Gabby Brissett, who had 10 while hitting .320. Defensively, Akron had three players reach double figures in digs, including Martina Villani's career-high 20, 14 from Vanessa Del Real, and 13 more from Reilly Chausse. From the front row, Chidera Ozoh contributed eight blocks and Brissett added six rejections. Villani recorded her seventh double-double of the year, adding 37 assists to her 20 digs.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips seized an early lead, handily winning the first set 25-18. Akron never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Zips took over the lead. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Bowling Green attacks in the stanza.
SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Akron put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-20 victory in set number two. The Zips grabbed control of the set lead early on at 2-1 and held the lead the rest of the way. Akron led by as many as six points at 13-7 before finishing off the set. The Akron offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Akron's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Bowling Green attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 Bowling Green attacking errors on the way to victory.
SET 3 | Akron saw its chance for a sweep end when Bowling Green took the third set. The Zips came up short in a back-and-forth battle, losing 25-22 in a set that featured five lead changes and was tied 11 times. Neither team had a lead of more than three points along the way.
SET 4 | Akron then dropped their second straight set 25-19 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Zips trailed by as many as six points as Bowling Green grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 and Akron wasn't able to recover in a set that was knotted up 12 times before the Falcons took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 5 | Akron jumped out to a two sets to none lead, but dropped the next three sets on their way to losing the match. The Zips lost the first point and never clawed back into the lead.
