Zips Secure 3-2 Win Over Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -The Akron volleyball team defeated the Western Michigan Broncos in five sets (25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 26-28, 15-9) Friday night on the road.
The Zips were led by a double-double from Delaney Gash, who registered 23 kills and 13 digs on the day. Lyndi Wolf also added 14 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Reilly Chausse supplied a career-high 31 digs to go with eight blocks from Chidera Ozoh. Martina Villani joined Gash in the double-double department with a 50 assist, 12 dig performance.
The conference win improved Akron's record to 9-9 overall and 2-5 in MAC play.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-22. Akron grabbed the advantage for good at 22-21after erasing a five-point deficit, the Broncos largest lead of the set. This came in a set that featured 11 ties and six lead changes. The Zips opening set win came in a stanza where 17 of their 25 points came via the kill.
SET 2 | After their win in the first set, Akron put themselves on the cusp of a sweep with a 25-23 victory in set number two. The Zips took the lead for good at 10-9 in a set that showcased six lead changes before the Zips took over the lead. Akron's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Western Michigan attacks in the stanza.
SET 3 | Western Michigan avoided a sweep with a third-set win to make it a 2-1 match. The Zips couldn't survive a furious Western Michigan rally, falling 25-22 after leading by eight points at 15-7 earlier in the set.
SET 4 | Akron then dropped their second straight set 28-26 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Zips fell in a tight set, losing in a stanza that was tied eight times and had four lead changes.
SET 5 | Akron needed five sets to take the match. After they grabbed a two sets to none lead, Western Michigan responded to take the third and fourth sets before the Zips finished off their victory with a 15-9 fifth-set win. The Zips scored first and never trailed in the fifth set to secure the victory. Akron ended on a high note, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, six points, to finish off the set.
