AKRON, Ohio - Sparked by the first career brace from redshirt senior Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah), the University of Akron men's soccer team held 13th-rated VCU scoreless and cruised to a 4-0 shutout victory on Friday (Sept. 6) at FirstEnergy Stadium.
How it Happened
Akron started the scoring when senior Jonas Buechte (Rantigen, Germany) notched his first goal of the season in the 26th minute (25:04) knocking in the deflection off of a free kick from redshirt senior Victor Gaulmin (Guipavas, France), who earned the assist on the tally.
The Zips tacked on another score on the first career goal from sophomore Matt Dreas (Covington, Ky.) at the 38:29 mark, again assisted by Gaulmin.
Akron maintained a 2-0 lead at halftime on the strength of a 10-1 advantage in shots, including 4-0 on net.
The Zips assumed a 3-0 edge on Clapier's 56th-minute (55:12) goal, his second of the season. Redshirt senior Emil Jaaskelainen (Bolton, England) and senior Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario) assisted the goal.
The Zips made it a 4-0 lead when Clapier found the back of the net at the 62:30 mark courtesy of assists from Henry and senior Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.).
Akron redshirt junior GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) recorded one save en route to posting the clean sheet in goal.
Game Notes
- Akron finished the evening registering an 18-7 margin in shots, including 6-1 on goal
- Clapier and Gaulmin led the Zips with a game-high three shots each.
