Zips Fall to Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Akron volleyball team jumped ahead 1-0, but couldn't hang on and lost in four sets (25-18, 21-25, 21-25, 19-25) to the Cleveland State Vikings Friday at Woodling Gym.
Emanouela Christodoulou finished with 15 kills while Gabby Brissett and Lauren Baker both recorded nine kills each. Baker also recorded her 500th point after notching 11 against the Vikings. Defensively, Akron had two players reach double figures in digs as Vanessa Del Real had 21 and Reilly Chausse had 11. Eliska Vytiskova recorded 24 assists while Martina Villani added 17.
The non-conference loss moved Akron to 4-8 on the season.
Game Notes
» Chausse had a match-high three aces and set a new career-high.
» Akron served up five aces on the way to a first-set victory.
» Christodoulou had a match-high 15 kills for Akron.
» Baker recorded her 500th career point in the contest.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips grabbed control of the set-one lead at 3-2 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-18. Akron led by as many as eight points at 24-16 before finishing off the set. Akron also supplemented their offense with five aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Akron then dropped the second set 25-21, evening things at a set each. Cleveland State grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that was tied up seven times before the Vikings took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 3 | Akron fell again in the third set to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Zips fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before falling in the set 25-21.
SET 4 | Akron lost the fourth set and the match, falling 25-19. The Zips fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before losing the set.

Akron begins Mid-American Conference action when it welcomes Ohio to James A. Rhodes Arena for two game beginning on Friday, September 27.
