NILES, Ohio -The Akron Zips took a 6-4 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hang on and fell 10-9 to the Youngstown State Penguins on Wednesday.

Josiah Ross (0-3) came out of the bullpen for Akron (9-31) and took the loss. Elijah Griffith was a bright spot for the Zips, starting the ballgame and throwing five innings, giving up four runs, zero earned, on five hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Zips got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up six runs, including a three-run triple off the bat of Evan Bottone and a two-run single from Austin Lafferty.

The Penguins then rallied to score nine runs and take a 9-6 lead before the Zips got back on the board in the eighth. Akron scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Max Bowman, which brought the score level at 9-9. Youngstown State then scored one time over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 10-9 win.
