AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Zips opened Mid-American Conference play against Toledo on Friday, March 8 at Skeeles Filed as the Zips late inning rally fell short in both games. The Rockets held on for 6-3 and 2-1 wins to open league play.

GAME 1 | Toledo 6, Akron 3

At the plate, the Zips were paced by Sam Seeker, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a walk and an RBI. Charlie Rhee put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-5 with a double. Breydan Cavey also contributed for Akron, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.

Jared Schaeffer (0-3) started and took the loss on the mound for Akron (3-9, 0-1). Anthony Fett threw 4.2 shutout innings out of the pen while allowing four hits, walking three and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Zips were trailing 2-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron got an RBI single from Cavey, scoring Seeker from second base.

The Zips deficit grew to 4-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fourth inning. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Max Bowman, which brought the score to 4-2.

Toledo expanded their lead to 6-2 before the Akron offense got going, reducing that lead to 6-3 in the eighth. The Zips scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Seeker. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

Dawson Tourney put together a quality outing on the mound against the Toledo Rockets, but it was not enough for the Akron Zips to bring home the win on Friday, as they fell by the score of 2-1.

The solid outing from Tourney (2-2) was not enough for Akron (3-10, 0-2). The left-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out six. Sophomore Emmett Gillies threw 2.2 shutout innings in relief while allowing four hits, walking one and striking out four.

Cavey led the way offensively for the Zips, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a double and a walk. Evan Bottone put together a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with two walks. Jack Poist also contributed, going 1-for-4 for Akron with an RBI.
