BOSTON, Mass. – Led by freshman Sharon Chepchirchir (Kapsabet, Kenya), the University of Akron track and field team opened the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Friday (Feb. 9) with four career-best performances from six Zips across five events.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Chepchirchir registered a time of 17:01.21 in the elite women's 5,000 meters.
• Freshman Mary Munga (Nyandarua, Kenya) narrowly missed posting a top-five time in indoor women's program history crossing the line in a career-best time of 4:53.82 in the women's mile.
• Redshirt junior Danielle Honaker (Ashland, Ohio) and junior Halle Sebest (Poland, Ohio) recorded career-best times of 17:51.61 and 17:54.04, respectively, in the unseeded women's 5,000 meters.
