SPARTANBURG, SC --The Akron Zips took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 7-5 win over the South Carolina Upstate Spartans on Saturday.

Freshman Sophia Wygast led the way offensively for the Zips, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Senior Kalli Macintosh-Houlder put together a noteworthy effort as well adding a home run and two RBI while going 2-for-4. Sophomore Meagan Lee also helped out, going 3-for-4 for Akron.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Wygast.

The Zips then held the Spartans scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Akron picked up a run on Macintosh-Houlder's one-out solo home run which brought the Zips lead to 6-0.

South Carolina Upstate narrowed Akron's lead to 6-2 before the Zips stretched the advantage to 7-2 in the sixth inning. The Zips scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of Lee. South Carolina Upstate put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 7-5 win.

GAME NOTES

» Lee picked up three hits in the game for Akron.
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed five runs across and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Zips went 3-for-8 (.375) with runners in scoring position while Akron pitchers limited South Carolina Upstate to just 2-for-15 (.133) with runners in scoring position.
» Akron pitchers faced 34 South Carolina Upstate hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and 10 fly balls while striking out two.
» Wygast led the Zips at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Macintosh-Houlder also added a home run and two RBI.
