Akron Rifle Set for GARC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The 12th-ranked University of Akron rifle team will vie for a team championship this weekend as the Zips battle for the Great America Rifle Conference Championships hosted by Army this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 24-25 in West Point, N.Y.
The smallbore rifle competition will take place on Saturday, Feb. 24, starting at 8:30 a.m., before the championships conclude with the air rifle race on Sunday, Feb. 25, at the same time.
The championship field includes No. 1 West Virginia, No. 3 Kentucky, No. 7 Ole Miss, No. 10 Navy, No. 12 Akron, No. 13 Memphis, and No. 14 Army.
Senior Gavin Perkowski (Bolivar, Ohio) leads the Zips this season posting team-best averages of 1179.27, 595.53 and 583.73, respectively, in the combined, air and smallbore rifles.
Scheduled to compete for the Zips are freshman Tyler DeKruger (Lancaster, N.Y.), sophomore Andrew Duross (Marlborough, Mass.), juniors Rachel Engels (Meridian, Idaho) and Joey Hahn (Middle Grove, N.Y.), freshman Diane Heschel (Oak Harbor, Ohio), junior Alexis Kirk (Clarence Center, N.Y.), freshman Elizabeth Lilly (Marble Falls, Texas), sophomore Rachael Paddock (Perry, N.Y.), redshirt senior Katie Paltz(Edison, N.J.), Perkowski, redshirt senior Jakob Rankin (Granbury, Texas), seniors Erin Schnupp (Gorham, Maine) and Samantha Shultz (Fort Wayne, Ind.), redshirt senior Brendan Seitz (Milford, Mass.), sophomore Natalia Siek (Flemington, N.J.) and junior Cory Stroupe (Brasstown, N.C.).
