Akron Wins Season Opener

FORT MYERS, Fla. --The Akron Zips broke through after a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning to knock off the Middle Tennessee Raiders 2-1 Friday.
Freshman Lily Sullivan drove in a pair of RBI to lead the Zips' offensive efforts. She went 1-2 at the plate.
Senior Cailey Joyce (1-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Akron (1-0). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning with the game still scoreless. Sophomore Brooke Sivek came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron and get them on the board.
After the Raiders rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Zips came back to retake the lead in the sixth inning. Akron scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Sullivan, which brought the Zips lead to 2-1. The score remained 2-1 for the rest of the game, as Akron held on for the win.
GAME NOTES
» Joyce limited Middle Tennessee to just 1-for-6 (.167) with runners in scoring position.
» Joyce faced 31 Middle Tennessee hitters in the game, allowing two ground balls and 15 fly balls while striking out four.
» Sullivan led the Zips at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two RBI.
