Zips Take Gold at the 2024 Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Akron Swimming and Diving team claimed first place at the conclusion of the 2024 Zippy Invitational.
The Zips took first place every single day over the four-day event.
Akron finished with 2,039 points while Oakland took second with 1,564 points and Buffalo finished third with 1,544 points.
Akron began the final day of competition with two of the top four times in the 200-yard backstroke prelims. Madelyn Gatrall took first with a time of 1:58.70 and Rebecca Reid placed fourth with a time of 2:01.42.
The Zips were strong in the 100-yard free with the top five times going to the Blue and Gold. Hannah Trainer (50.45) finished first, Julia Mauter (50.54) took second, Dominika Kossakowska (50.83) placed third, Ada Szwabinska (50.84) finished fourth and Helena Lalkovic (50.94) took fifth. Nine Zips qualified for the finals.
Akron claimed three of the top five times in the 200-yard breaststroke. Madelyn Bosler took first with a time of 2:17 while Kendall Craig (2:19.06) and Claire Cox (2:19.88) finished third and fifth. Six Zips qualified for the finals.
Addy Soehnlen finished second in the 200-yard butterfly prelims with a time of 2:02.34 while two other Zips advanced to the finals.
Elle Couture finished second in the 1650-yard free with a time of 16:55.25 to begin the finals session.
Gatrall finished first in the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA B cut time of 1:53.90 while Reid finished fourth with a time of 1:59.49.
The Zips then took the top five times in the 100-yard free with Trainer leading the way with a time of 49.74. Kossakowska (49.79), Szwabinska (49.81), Mauter (50.34) and Lalkovic (50.64) took second through fifth.
Akron claimed gold in the 200-yard breaststroke as Bosler swam a time of 2:13.44. Craig and Cox posted top five times as well, with Craig (2:15.65) finishing third and Cox (2:17.10) finishing fourth.
Addy Soehnlen led the way for the Blue and Gold in the 200-yard fly with a second-place finish and a time of 2:00.82.
The Zips concluded the last day of competition with a first and second-place finish in the 400-yard free relay. The "Z" squad of Kossakowska (50.07), Trainer (49.23), Szwabinska (49.59) and Gatrall (49.03) finished first with a time of 3:17.92 while the "I" squad of Aislinn Holder (50.38), Mauter (50.29), Lalkovic (50.70) and Reid (49.20) finished second with a time of 3:20.57.
On the men's side, Pietro Ubertalli of Cornell set a meet and pool record in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:40.94. He broke the previous record of 1:42.70 set by Matt Driscoll of UC Santa Barbara in 2023.
Jet Fuhrmann of Keiser set a meet and pool record in the 100-yard free with a time of 43.13. He broke the previous record held by Christian Bart of Oakland set in 2023.
Joseph Gurski of Cornell set a meet and pool record in the 200-yard fly with a time of 1:43.77. The previous record was also set by Gurski (1:44.85) in 2023.
The Oakland 400-yard free relay squad of Harry Nicholson, Micah Scheffer, Jack Wilke and Charlie Brown set a meet and pool record with a time of 2:53.17. The previous record of 2:54.43 was set by Cornell in 2023.
Akron is back in action on January 10 when it takes part in the Buffalo Diving Invite in Buffalo, N.Y., and a dual meet against Duquesne in Pittsburgh, PA.
