AKRON, Ohio - The 13th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team got a pair of goals from redshirt senior Emil Jaaskelainen (Bolton, England), including the game-winner, in a 3-1 win over DePaul in the BIG EAST Championship Quarterfinals on Saturday (Nov. 9) at FirstEnergy Stadium.
How it Happened
Akron grabbed a 1-0 lead when redshirt senior Victor Gaulmin (Guipavas, France) recorded his fourth goal of the season in the 27th minute (26:00), assisted by senior Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario).
The Zips scored again on a goal from Jaaskelainen -- his 21st goal of the season -- in the 30th minute (29:20), assisted by redshirt senior Beto Ydrach (Orlando, Fla.).
Akron built its lead to 3-0 on Jaaskelainen's goal at the 46:25 mark, his 22nd of the season. Henry assisted the goal, his team-leading eighth of the season.
The Blue Demons cut into the Zips lead and made it a 3-1 game with a 64th-minute (63:56) goal from Logan Finnegan, assisted by Liam Mullins.

- The Zips recorded their first-ever victory in BIG EAST Championship play with the triumph over the Blue Demons.
- Redshirt junior GK Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.) totaled one save for the Zips out of three total Blue Demons shots.
- Akron put six shots on goal.
- Jaaskelainen posted a game-high seven shots for the Zips, including four on goal, while Gaulmin added three shots, with one falling on frame.
- Jaaskelainen moved into a second-place tie in the Akron record book with Louie Nanchoff (1975) for single-season goals netting his 21st and 22nd tallies on the campaign.
- The brace for Jaaskelainen marked his team-leading ninth multi-goal performance of the season.
- The victory marked Akron's first in league tournament play since besting Western Michigan, 3-0, in the finals of the 2018 Mid-American Conference Tournament in Morgantown, W.Va.
