Zips Lead the Way After First Day of the Magnus Cup Invitational

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Akron Swimming and Diving Team finished the first day of the Magnus Cup Invitational in first place after scoring 507 points.
The Zips were followed by Tulane (401 points) and Xavier (198.5 points)
The Zips started Thursday by sending seven swimmers to the 50-yard breaststroke finals highlighted by Claire Cox (28.85) who swam the fastest time in the prelims. The Blue and Gold also saw Rebecca Reid record the third fastest time (29.08) and Ada Szwabinska (29.18) swim the fourth fastest.
Akron then saw six swimmers qualify for the 500-yard freestyle finals with Elle Couture posting the fastest prelim time (4:56.01), which was good for the fourth-fastest time. Helena Lalkovic (4:56.18) and Dominika Kossakowska (4:58.94) finished fifth and sixth respectively in the prelims.
Abigail Daniel posted the fastest time (2:01.86) in the 200-yard IM prelims while Reid (2:02.05) and Madelyn Gatrall (2:02.43) finished third and fourth. In total, eight Zips qualified.
Daniel was once again leading the way for the Zips as she finished with the third fastest time (22.96) in the 50-yard freestyle prelims. Szwabinska (23.05) and Gatrall (23.38) finished fifth and sixth to highlight eight Zips to advance to the finals.
Akron began the finals picking up first in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The "Z" team of Daniel (22.68), Szwabinska (22.62), Gatrall (22.50) and Aislinn Holder (22.82) finished with a time of 1:30.62 to set a pool record.
Cox would place second in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 28.82 while the Zips took three of the top five times in the 500-yard freestyle. Lalkovic finished second with a time of 4:51.07 while Couture finished fourth with a time of 4:53.82 and Kossakowska finished fifth with a time of 4:53.91.
The Blue and Gold would see more points roll through in 200-yard IM with a first and fourth-place finish. Daniel took first with a time of 1:58.69 while Gatrall finished fourth with a time of 2:01.54.
Daniel paced the Zips in the 50-yard freestyle with a third-place finish with a time of 22.56.
Akron would clinch first place again with a 3:37.52 time in the 400-yard medley relay with Gatrall (53.18), Cox (1:01.79), Daniel (53.21) and Szwabinska (49.34) leading the charge.
The Zips return to action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
