Akron Battles Rival Kent State in Annual Dual Meet

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams continue their 2024 indoor campaign this weekend as the Zips travel to face rival Kent State in a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 19 at the Kent State Field House.
UP NEXT: The 28-event meet with the Golden Flashes will commence with the men's long jump as well as the women's high jump, pole vault, shot put and weight throw beginning at 3:30 p.m., before the women's mile kicks off action on the track at 4 p.m.
The event will be scored as a dual meet with 5-3-2-1 points being awarded for individual events with two scores per team, while relays will be scored with the winner being awarded five points and the runner-up three points.

A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron track and field team posted a pair of victories as part of 12 overall top-five performances at the Jud Logan Memorial hosted by Kent State on Jan. 13.
• Redshirt junior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) captured the men's pole vault eclipsing 17-4.50 (5.30m).
• Redshirt senior Jabari Neal-Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the men's weight throw with a mark of 62-1 (18.93m).
• Junior Jamari Davis (Ontario, Calif.) crossed the line in a career-best time of 25.22 in the women's 200 meters to place second.
• Tysean Baronette (Middleton, Del.) finished third in the men's 200 meters in a career-best time of 22.06.
• Sophomore Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio) placed third in the men's shot put with a career-best throw of 55-0 (16.76m).
• The women's 4x400 relay team of Davis, sophomore Tai'Yanna Cage (West Palm Beach, Fla.), freshman Josephine Davis (Lewis Center, Ohio), sophomore Jade Celestine (Ajax, Ontario) finished second in a time of 3:57.20.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2023 outdoor season as the Zips rated in the Event Squad rankings released on May 15, 2023, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranked fifth nationally in the men's hammer, 20th in the men's pole vault and 30th in the men's shot put.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2024 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has one student-athlete ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) for the 2024 indoor campaign, including, Hunter Garretson, who is 14th in the nation in the men's pole vault (17-4.50/5.30m).
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Hunter Garretson was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA was presented with the award during the presentation. He became the second Zip to earn the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON GARNERS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson garnered First-Team All-America accolades on the strength of a second-place showing (18-8.25/5.70m) at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Texas on June 7. William Gross garnered Second-Team All-America honors placing 16th in the men's hammer (221-3/67.45m), while senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) were named Honorable Mention All-America recipients in the men's 400 meters and 5,000 meters, respectively.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips posted a trio of school records on the campaign, including Brian Masai in the men's 5,000 and 10,000 meters and redshirt junior Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) as part of nine overall top-five performances in program history to the record book during the 2023 outdoor campaign.
