Zips Secure 3-2 Victory Over Marshall

HUNTINGTON, WV --The Akron volleyball team displayed notable resilience in a five set victory against the Marshall Thundering Herd Saturday on the road at Cam Henderson Center.
The out-of-conference victory improved the Zips' overall record to 2-3 on the season.
The Zips were led by a double-double from Faith Johnson, who registered 17 kills and 10 digs on the day. Ellen Kinnaird also added 10 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Vanessa Del Real chipped in for with 16 digs to go with four blocks from Kinnaird.

SET 1 | The Zips won the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to secure the first set 25-16. Akron opened up its biggest lead, nine points, to finish off the set, collecting 15 kills along the way. Akron also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Akron lost set two 25-18 to tie the match 1-1. The Zips dropped the second set despite a strong performance on the attacking side. Akron put together a .310 attack percentage with 11 kills in the set loss.
SET 3 | A set-three loss put Akron behind two sets to one. The Zips fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-10.
SET 4 | Akron broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-19 victory in set number four. The Zips took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to secure the victory. Akron finished up the stanza on a strong note, claiming its biggest lead, six points, to finish off the set, totaling 18 kills while only registering two attack errors along the way.
SET 5 | Akron rallied from down 2-1 to win the next two sets, culminating in a 15-9 fifth-set victory, and grab the 3-2 win. The Zips led from the opening point on in the fifth set to earn the victory. Akron opened up as much as a nine point lead at 10-1 before finishing off the set. Akron also supplemented their offense with five aces in the final set.
