Volleyball Looks to Bounce Back at the Marshall Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron volleyball team will continue their season as they travel to Huntington, West Virginia for the Marshall Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 1-2.

The Zips will once again have three matches in two days at Cam Henderson Arena. Friday, the Zips have a single game as they face Morehead State at 10 a.m. Akron will then have a doubleheader on Saturday as they play the Thundering Herd at 11 a.m. before facing UNC Greensboro at 3 p.m.

ABOUT THE ZIPS
Last weekend the Zips opened the season with three matches and recorded 120 kills, almost a third of them (39) were the work of senior OH Faith Johnson. Johnson registered 4.04 points per set, which included a second best 31 digs and 10 blocks. Sophomores Avery Brown (30) and Baylee Vought (39) each recorded at least 30 assists, while Vanessa Del Real anchored the defense with 52 digs. Del Real added 18 assists and 6 aces en route to earning Panther Invitational All-Tournament honors. In the first three matches, Akron registered 22 aces, including 12 against Louisiana at Monroe in their five-set affair.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Morehead State went 3-0 when they hosted the Eagle Challenge. The Eagles swept all their matches in three sets. M.E. Hargan and Amelia Nott each scored 37.5 points in the opening weekend. Hargan also had a team-high 31 kills, including 12 against USC Upstate.
The host team, Marshall University, dropped their first match of the Bethune-Cookman Invitational but came back to sweep their final two matches of the opening weekend. Over the three matches the Herd outnumbered their opponents with 113-102 kills, 108-98 in assists, and 19-16 with service aces. Brynn Brown has already recorded 74 assists and Kylee Stokes accounts for over 20% of the Herd's 152 points scored.
The Spartans of UNC Greensboro also comes into the Marshall Invitational 0-3 on the season. In back-to-back games against East Carolina before facing Georgia Southern. Mallory Meers had 23 assists in their most recent match. Jocelyn Carter notched 21 kills in the Bash in the Boro invitational.

Akron will make the short trip to Cleveland State's Woodling Gym to take on the Vikings at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 6.
