AKRON, -- The 22nd-rated University of Akron men's soccer team held Niagara scoreless and cruised to a 6-0 shutout victory Thursday (Aug. 24) at home at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The win improved Akron's record to 1-0-0 overall.

How it Happened

Akron took a 1-0 lead when redshirt senior Will Jackson (Hudson, Ohio) notched his first goal of the season in the fourth minute, assisted by redshirt senior Johnny Fitzgerald (Tallahassee, Fla.) and senior Josef Paulus (Hinckley, Ohio).

The Zips added another score on a goal from junior Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) -- his first goal of the season -- in the 30th minute, assisted by senior Joel Sangwa (Phoenix, Ariz.) and junior Jonas Buechte (Rantigen, Germany).

Akron extended its lead to 3-0 on Fitzgerald's 43rd-minute goal, his first of the season. Junior Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.) assisted the goal.

The Zips went up 4-0 with a 56th-minute goal from junior Gyuwon Chong (Kansas City, Mo.), his first goal of the season. Redshirt senior Sam Tojaga (Erie, Pa.) and senior Alejandro Varela (A Coruna, Spain) assisted the goal.

Akron increased its advantage to make it a 5-0 game on Paulus' first goal of the season in the 58th minute.

The Zips extended their lead to 6-0 thanks to a 72nd-minute goal from sophomore Stefan Dobrijevic (Uniontown, Ohio). The 6-0 held to the end of the match.
