Akron Unveils Challenging 2023 Men's Soccer Schedule as Zips Enter Big East Conference

AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron men's soccer team unveiled a challenging 2023 fall slate, one that will see the Zips face five opponents from the 2022 NCAA Tournament field, 11th-year head coach Jared Embick announced today.

In 2023, the Zips' 11-match season-ticket package features trips to FirstEnergy Stadium from NCAA Tournament participants Florida International, Vermont and Providence, as well as Notre Dame.

Akron is set to return 11 starters in 2023, including 2022 All-Mid-American Conference performers, junior Jonas Buechte (Rantigen, Germany), redshirt juniors Dyson Clapier (Layton, Utah) and Johnny Fitzgerald (Tallahassee, Fla.), junior Malik Henry (Hamilton, Ontario), redshirt senior Will Jackson (Hudson, Ohio), senior Joel Sangwa (Phoenix, Ariz.) and juniors Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.) and Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal (Carbondale, Ill.), from a squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 35th time in program history.
The Zips will also be bolstered by the return of key 2022 contributors in redshirt sophomore Mitch Budler (Lincoln, Neb.), junior Gyuwon Chong (Kansas City, Mo.), sophomore Stefan Dobrijevic (Uniontown, Ohio), junior Josh Hallenberger (San Antonio, Texas), sophomore Ashton Kamdem (West Chester, Ohio), senior Josef Paulus (Hinckley, Ohio) and redshirt senior Sam Tojaga (Erie, Pa.).

The Zips commence their 69th season of intercollegiate soccer hosting Niagara in Akron's home opener on Aug. 24 before closing out the month entertaining 2022 NCAA Tournament participant Vermont on Aug. 28.

The Zips will make their Big East Conference debut this fall with an eight-game schedule that will culminate with the league's tournament running Nov. 4-12. Each team is scheduled to play eight conference games, including each of the five teams in their respective divisions, and three teams from the out of region division.

The month of September includes home contests versus 2022 NCAA Tournament participants Florida International (Sept. 11) and Seton Hall (Sept. 29), as well as Akron's Big East Conference debut against Providence (Sept. 15). Additionally, the Zips will host Southern Indiana (Sept. 4), Long Island (Sept. 8) and Notre Dame (Sept. 19), while also featuring tilts at Michigan (Sept. 1) and St. John's (Sept. 23).

The Zips face a challenging month of October as Akron opens play hosting Northern Kentucky (Oct. 3) and DePaul (Oct. 7), before facing three consecutive road contests at Cleveland State (Oct. 10), Xavier (Oct. 14) and Creighton (Oct. 18). Akron returns home on Oct. 21 to battle Marquette on Senior Night before drawing their regular season schedule to a close at Butler (Oct. 28).

The eight-team Big East Conference Tournament commences on Nov. 4 with quarterfinal matches on campus sites. The semifinals and final will then take place at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md., Nov. 9 and Nov. 12, respectively.

The Zips take to the pitch for the initial time on Aug. 14 when Akron visits VCU in the first of two exhibition matches before traveling to Oakland on Aug. 19 to round out the exhibition campaign.

The NCAA Men's Soccer Championship play is set to commence on Nov. 16 and will culminate Dec. 8-11 at the College Cup in Louisville, Ky.
