May 20 | Baseball
AKRON, Ohio – The Akron baseball program completed the 2023 campaign with 2-1 series win over Ohio, as the Zips fell 3-1 at Skeeles Field on Saturday.
Before the game Akron honored its graduating senior class, recognizing SS Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.), RHP Brady Biglin (Crestline, Ohio), 1B Greyson Drooste (Fishers, Ind.) and RP/INF Jackson Miller (Medina, Ohio).
Akron (21-34, 12-18 MAC) finished the season with 21 wins, the most since the program's return in 2020. The Zips also saw the single season homerun record fall as junior Jack Firestone (Zionsville, Ind.) recorded his 17th homerun of the season, registering one of the Zips two hits on the day. Sophomore Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) collected Akron's second hit with a single to centerfield in the fifth inning.
Junior Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the complete game loss, allowing no earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts, one walk and one hit batsman.
The Bobcats capitalized on a pair of Akron fielding errors, scoring one run in the opening frame and two runs in the fourth. Akron held the Bobcats scoreless in the third inning and tied the game in the bottom half when Firestone launched a solo shot over the left-center field wall, 1-1. Ohio (19-30, 15-15 MAC) countered with the two runs on a miscue to regain the lead, 3-1 and held on for the win.
