Zips Rally Late to Take 2-0 Series Lead Over Ohio

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron offense surged for five runs in the eighth inning for a 7-6 win over Ohio in game two of the series at Skeeles Field on Friday.
Akron issued six of their 10 hits in the bottom of the eighth inning as junior IF Breydan Cavey (Medina, Ohio) delivered the go-ahead RBI single to centerfield. Cavey went 2-of-3 from the plate, launching a two-run homerun in the second inning to give the Zips a 2-1 lead. Cavey finished the game with a team-high three RBI.
Junior CF Jack Poist (Hoover, ala.) registered a 2-of-4 performance in the batter's box and started the eighth inning rally with a lead-off walk. Junior OF Jack Firestone (Zionsville, Ind.) pushed a base hit through the left side and graduate 3B Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) followed with a single to right field to load the bases. Sophomore C Andrew Horvath (Aurora, Ohio) plated the first run with an RBI single to right field, while junior OF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio) blasted a 2-RBI double down the left field line to put the Zips within one run, 6-5. After sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) pushed the tying run across the plate with a ground out, Cavey delivered what proved to be the game winner.
Akron junior LHP Anthony Fett (Orchard Lake, Mich.) earned the win, throwing three complete innings allowing no earned runs (three runs total) on four hits with one strikeout. Freshman starting pitcher Emmett Gillies (Columbus, Ohio) tossed a no decision, hurling six complete innings with one earned run (three runs total) on eight hits three strikeouts and two walks.
The Bobcats started the scoring in the first inning with a pair of doubles for a 1-0 advantage. Akron put the first two batters on base as Poist singled and Firestone walked but couldn't push a run across the plate. At the end of the first inning Ohio led 1-0. Akron answered in the second inning with two runs after Seeker walked on four straight pitches and Cavey sent a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for two RBI and 2-1 Zips lead.
The Bobcats capitalized on four Akron fielding errors as Ohio knotted the game in the top of the third inning with a two-out single to left field and plated a second consecutive unearned run for a 3-2 advantage on a two-out double down the left field line. In the seventh, the visitors scored three additional unearned runs, taking a 6-2 lead.

The final game of the season and the series against Ohio is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. The Akron baseball program will recognize its graduating seniors prior to the game at approximately 1:40 p.m.
