Zips Sixth After Round One, Pikunas Leads Akron at MAC Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – During the first 18-hole round of the 2023 Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championships, Akron carded a 307 (+19) team total as senior Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) paced the Zips scoring efforts at Kalamazoo Country Club on Friday.

Pikunas finished the initial nine holes with a 3-over ledger and fired eight par scores and a birdie to finish with a 73 (+2) total. Pikunas is currently ranked tied for seventh on the players' leaderboard.

Sophomore Daphne van Son (Vlijmen, Netherlands) followed in scoring for Akron, posting a 3-over par 75 and landing tied for12th on the leaderboard. Junior Jessica Hahn (Canton, Ohio) and freshman Avery Wright (Jackson, Ohio) posted 78 (+6) and 80 (+8), respectively, while junior Abbi Fleiner (Reno, Nev.) rounded out the scoring with a 85 (+13) total.

Kent State leads the team scoring with a 3-over par 291 total, establishing a 12-stroke advantage over current runner-up Western Michigan 303 (+15).

The MAC Championships are scheduled to continue Saturday, April 22 at 9:30 a.m. Akron is scheduled to tee-off on hole No. 1 at 11:10 a.m. with Fleiner leading the way followed by Wright (11:20), Hahn (11:30), van Son (11:40) and Pikunas (11:50).
