Cardinals Claim Series with Doubleheader Sweep

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips fell in a doubleheader to top-ranked Ball State by scores of 11-6 and 9-1 on Sunday at Skeeles Field.
Akron registered four hits in game one and five in game two as graduate IF Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior IF Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas) paced the squad with two hits each. Arrivo and junior OF Jack Firestone (Zionsville, Ind.) both recorded doubles.
In game one, Akron (12-15, 5-7 MAC) plated the first run as Seeker punched a 2-2, two-out pitch through the left side to push Firestone across the plate. Ball State (20-7, 10-2 MAC) retaliated with a two-run homerun in the second inning, but the lead didn't last long as Akron plated runs in the bottom of the second and third innings for the lead. The Zips tied the game in the second inning as Firestone walked with bases loaded, and with two-outs in the third inning Horvath singled to centerfield, sending Hara across the plate. The Cardinals walked two more batters with bases loaded as Arrivo and Firestone collected RBI, 5-2 Akron.
Ball State cut into the Zips lead by scoring one in the fourth inning and took control of the scoreboard in the fifth with four-run a scoring outburst, 7-5 Ball State. The Zips pulled within one run in the sixth, 7-6, but the Cardinals reclaimed a two-run advantage in the eighth. The Cardinals added to the lead in the ninth, scoring three runs, 11-8.
In game two, Ball State opened the game with two runs on two hits before Akron stepped to the plate. Akron quickly loaded the bases as Arrivo singled and Firestone and Pennington walked, but only managed to push one run across the plate. The Cardinals added four runs in the third inning and two in the fourth for an 8-1 lead. The Cardinals plated the final run in the ninth inning.
