AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team culminated another strong weekend of performances as the Zips posted seven victories as part of 25 overall top-three efforts on the final day of the 19th Annual Akron Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Stile Athletics Field House.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Redshirt junior Caleb Mabins (Erie, Pa.) was a double winner for the Zips capturing the men's long jump with a mark of 23-1.50 (7.05m) before edging the field in the men's triple jump with a mark of 47-8.75 (14.55m).
• Redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) remained unbeaten on the campaign in the men's pole vault besting the bar at 17-6.75 (5.35m), while sophomore Oscar Prieto (Barcelona, Spain) finished third with a clearance of 16-6.75 (5.05m).
• Redshirt senior Milton Wilson (Streetsboro, Ohio), redshirt junior Jabari Neal-Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore William Gross (Newfane, N.Y.) took the top-three spots in the men's weight throw with marks of 65-7 (19.99m), 63-2 (19.26m) and 62-4 (19.01m).
• Freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) won the men's invitational mile in a time of 4:03.33, while freshman Zayd Elkurd (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and redshirt senior Oliver Huffman (Augusta, Ga.) placed second and third in 4:15.80 and 4:16.99, respectively.
• The women's 4x400 relay team of redshirt sophomore Janay Bass (Akron, Ohio), redshirt sophomore Anna Altstadt (Huntingburg, Ind.), freshman Jade Celestine (Ajax, Ontario) and redshirt sophomore Sage Harmon (Bloomsburg, Pa.) bested the field in a time of 4:01.03.
• Senior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) triumphed in the men's high jump with a mark of 6-8 (2.05m), while redshirt junior Avalonn Harper (Wooster, Ohio) finished third at 6-4.75 (1.95m).
• Redshirt junior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio) finished second in the men's heptathlon with a seven-event cumulative score of 4,581.
• Redshirt junior Colt Hemphill (Louisville, Ohio) turned in a time of 1:53.65 to place second in the men's 800 meters.
• Redshirt junior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Maddie Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) finished second and third in the women's 800 meters crossing the line in 2:12.79 and 2:19.19, respectively.
• Junior Haruki Sakai (Katori, Japan) and junior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) finished second and third in the men's long jump with marks of 22-11.50 (7.00m) and 22-10 (6.96m) before flipping positions in the men's triple jump with marks of 43-10.75 (13.38m) and 47-3 (14.40m).
• Sophomore Brynn Rychlik (Marysville, Ohio) eclipsed 12-3.75 (3.75m) to place second in the women's pole vault.
• Sophomore Lane Graham (Killbuck, Ohio) placed third in the men's shot put with a throw of 55-6.50 (16.93m).
• Senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished third in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in 49.60.
• Sophomore Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) finished third in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.95.

Akron will compete in a trio of meets next weekend as the Zips will participate at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., the Spire Invitational in Geneva, Ohio, and the David Hemery Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass.
