Zips secure 3-0 sweep over Northern Illinois

DEKALB, IL --The Akron volleyball team secured a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-20, 25-16) over the Northern Illinois Huskies Friday on the road at Victor E Court.
The conference victory improved Akron's record to 11-12 overall and 6-6 in MAC play. The Huskies fall to 8-16 on the season and an even 6-6 against conference opponents.Â
Faith Johnson finished with 13 kills on the day to lead the Zips attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .286. Akron got 9 digs from Vanessa Del Real to lead them defensively.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips took control on the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to win the first set 25-22. Akron led by as many as four points at 18-14 before closing out the set, totaling 16 kills along the way. Akron also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Akron won set two 25-20 to swiftly jump to a 2-0 lead. The Zips grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that showcased three lead changes before Akron took over the lead.
SET 3 | Akron took the third set to sweep the match. The Zips won the set 25-16 helped by a solid showing on the attacking side. Akron put together a .419 attack percentage with 15 kills in the set win. The Zips ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.
Up Next
The Zips will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Kalamazoo to take on the MAC's top team. First serve between Akron and Western Michigan is scheduled for 3 p.m.
