Zips Fall to Toledo in Tough Five Set Match

AKRON, OH --Â Ellen Kinnaird racked up 11 kills with a .526 hitting percentage, but the Akron volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-21, 20-25, 25-27, 25-22, 15-17) to the Toledo Rockets Saturday at home at James A Rhodes Arena.
The loss dropped Akron's record to 10-12 overall and 5-6 in MAC action.
The Zips were led by a double-double from Faith Johnson, who registered 23 kills and 13 digs on the day. Genevieve Hara also added 15 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Vanessa Del Real chipped in with 14 digs to go with three blocks from Eliska Vytiskova.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-21. Akron never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 22-21 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Zips took over late in the stanza. Akron also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Akron then lost set two 25-20, evening the match at a set apiece. Toledo grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that was tied up seven times before the Rockets took over the lead.
SET 3 | A third-set loss put Akron behind two sets to one. The Zips dropped a back-and-forth battle, losing 27-25 in a set that featured 11 lead changes and was tied 14 times. Neither team had a lead of more than three points along the way.
SET 4 | Akron broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-22 victory in set number four. The Zips survived a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured two lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than four points along the way.
SET 5 | After dropping sets two and three, Akron won set four, tying things up at 2-2 to force a fifth set, but couldn't complete the comeback, losing the set 17-15 and the match 3-2. The Zips dropped a tight fifth set, losing in a stanza that was tied five times and had two lead changes. The Zips dropped the set despite putting together 12 of their 15 points via the kill.
