Zips Drop Five-Set Decision Against Iona

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- Â The Akron volleyball team (0-4) fell in a five-set decision, 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 11-15) Â against Iona on Friday in the opening game of the Seton Hall Invite.

Senior Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) led the Zips' offensive efforts with 13 kills and two service aces, while junior Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) rounded out the double-figure kills with 10.

Defensively, Ochaya ended with a match-high 46 digs and was a force above the net registering a match-high five solo blocks. Freshman Avery Brown (Decatur, Ga.) paced Akron with 23 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Iona took the first set, 25-20 after the Gaels out-hit the Zips, 16-14 kills and only having one attack error to the Zips' seven. Iona ended the first set with a .357 hiting percentage.
- Akron took the second set, 25-21 and took advantage of the 11 errors Iona had. Sophomore Baylee Vought led the set with two service aces.
-Akron kept momentum and won the third set, 25-22. Johnson led the third set with four kills, while Ochaya had two blocks. The Zips limited Iona to just a .023 hitting percentage.
- Iona took set four with a 25-18 win. The Gaels hit .243 percent to the Zips' .138 percent and completed 2 service aces and 167 total kills.
- A .300 hitting percentage lifted the Gaels past Akron for a 15-11 final set victory that secured the match win. Akron's only four kills came from Ochaya and freshman Chloe Werner (Waterford, Wisc.) with two each. Akron ended the final set with five errors.

UP NEXT
Akron will wrap up the Seton Hall Invite on Saturday, Sept. 3 as the Zips face Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m., followed by George Mason at 4:30 p.m.
