Akron Faces a Pair of Horizon League Opponents This Week

AKRON, Ohio-Â The Akron volleyball team is slated for a pair of matches against Horizon League opponents as the Zips host Youngstown State at James A. Rhodes Arena on Thursday, Sept. 15, before traveling to Cleveland State's Woodling Gymnasium for a second meeting against the Vikings on Friday, Sept. 16. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and can be watched on ESPN+ or followed by live stats.

ABOUT THE ZIPS
Akron, under first-year head coach Tyson Norton stands 3-6 overall after posting a 2-1 overall record at the Akron Invitational last week. The Zips defeated Cleveland State (3-2) and Morgan State (3-0) and fell to Valparaiso (1-3). Teagan Ochaya, Faith Johnson and Karleighana Jones led the offense over the three-game stretch.

Ochaya led the Zips defense with 36 digs, averaging a team-high three digs per set. She also led the Zips in kills, pounding out 39 kills to average 3.25 kills per set. Ochaya posted double digits in digs and kills each match, collecting 10 (Cleveland State), 12 (Valparaiso) and 14 (Morgan State) digs while recording 12 (Cleveland State), 14 (Valparaiso) and 13 (Morgan State) kills. Johnson followed with 38 kills and 3.17 kills per set, including a team-high five service aces. She also contributed 27 digs, seven blocks and two assists. Jones was a key member in Akron's offense over the weekend as she posted 26 kills while recording a .328 hitting percentage. Jones followed with a team-high 11 blocks. In addition, Baylee Vought averaged 5.08 assists per set en route to a team-high 61 assists at the Akron Invitational. She posted a .382 percentage on 157 total attempts as the Zips posted a 2-1 record at the Akron Invitational. In addition, Vought collected 25 digs, five kills and one service ace.

SCOUTING YOUNGSTOWN STATE
Youngstown State enters Thursday's match with a 5-4 overall record, defeating Idano (3-0), Delaware State (3-2), St. Thomas (3-0), Canisius (3-0) and Bucknell (3-2) while falling to Valparaiso (1-3), Central Michigan (0-3), Saint Louis (0-3), and Buffalo (1-3). Paula Gursching leads the Penguins offense with 4.13 kills per set and team-best 132 kills, while Josi Borum follows with 1.84 kills per set and 59 total put-aways. Isabel Schaefbauer and Borum share the assists with 4.67 and 4.66 assists per set and 154 and 149 total assist, respectively. Defensively, Isidora Sisic anchors the Guins defense with 3.48 digs per set and 115 total digs, while Dayan Malave paces the efforts above the net with 25 total blocks. Nadia Pace and Borum add 23 and 20 blocks, respectively.

Cleveland State stands 2-7 overall after finishing the Akron Invitational with a 1-2 mark last week. The Vikings defeated Morgan State (3-1) but fell to Valparaiso (1-3) and the Zips (2-3). The Viking offense is paced by Laken Voss with 3.41 kills per set and 109 total kills on a .199 hitting percentage Liberty Torres and Madison Quirino follow with 2.09 and 2.00 kills per set and 52 and 48 kills overall, respectively. In addition, Karly Klaer and Abby Miller share the bulk of the assists with 169 and 121 total assists. Audrey McConihe anchors the Vikings' defense with 4.31 digs per set and 168 total digs. Above the net Cleveland State recorded 83 total blocks as Madison Olinger and Lydia Latimer lead the squad with 34 and 26 blocks. Madalynn Butler follows with 20 total blocks.
