AKRON, Ohio – The 12th-rated University of Akron men's soccer team renewed its rivalry with in-state foe Ohio State and the top-25 showdown lived up to the hype as the Zips (4-1-1) and 22nd-ranked Buckeyes (4-0-2) battled to a 3-3 draw on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Akron garnered goals in the fifth (4:25), 63rd (62:46) and 69th (68:48) minutes, respectively, from junior Ryan Kingsford (Herne Bay, England), sophomore Jason Shokalook (Erie, Pa.) and freshman Stefan Dobrijevic (Uniontown, Ohio).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Buckeyes came into the affair having surrendered only one goal on the campaign through its first five games and the Zips ended that streak when Kingsford found the back of the net at the 4:25 mark for this second goal of the year. Shokalook earned the assist on the tally.
• Ohio State evened the game at one with a goal in the seventh minute (6:39).
• The Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead with a tally at the 54:04 mark.
• Shokalook leveled the score at two in the 63rd minute (62:46) with an unassisted tally that went to the upper 90.
• Akron regained the advantage after sophomore Jonas Buechte (Rantigen, Germany) served a ball off the endline at the corner of the box that Dobrijevic elevated and headed the ball past the Ohio State goalkeeper for the goal at the 68:48 mark.
• The Zips continued to battle despite playing the final 17 minutes a man down and nearly garnered the victory before the Buckeyes netted the equalizer on a corner kick in the 83rd minute (82:59).
• Kingsford led Akron with a team-high two shots.
