Chippewas Use Late Rally for Series Opening Win

Mount Pleasant, Mich. – All nine Akron players pounded out a hit and plated a run as top-ranked Central Michigan surged for six runs in the eighth inning for a come-from-behind 11-10 series opening win on Friday at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.

Akron fell behind 5-1 after three innings but battled back for the lead with a five-run fifth inning for a 6-5 advantage. The Zips scored their first run in the third inning after Senior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) reached on a CMU fielding error and freshman Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) pushed him across the plate with an RBI single to center field.

Two-innings later, Akron used four hits and two walks to generate five runs. Wargo started the scoreboard takeover with a single to centerfield, and for a second time in the game moved into scoring position on a passed ball. The Zips graduate Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) drew a base on balls to put runners on the corners and freshman Cameron Benson (Farmington Hills, Mich.) plated the run with an RBI single to center. After an graduate Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) Â walk, senior Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.) single up the middle to score two runs and senior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) blasted a triple to right field for two RBI and a one-run lead for the Zips.

Akron added a pair of runs in the seventh and the eighth for a commanding 10-5 lead. In the seventh, senior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) reached on a walk to open the inning and Barr plated Reinhart on a groundout to the shortstop. Pennington scored on a wild pitch after a walk to give Akron the 8-5 advantage. In the following inning, Akron scored both runs with two outs as Shellenbarger and graduate Jackson Haas (Cincinnati, OH) singled, and Reinhart ripped a double down the left field line to score both runs.

In the bottom of the eighth, Central Michigan rallied for six runs on four hits and left one runner on base as they reclaimed an 11-10 lead.
