AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's basketball program secured sophomore transfer Sammy Hunter from Southeastern Conference Ole Miss for the 2022-23 season, head coach John Groce announced Thursday.
Â
Hunter is a 6-9, 225-pound forward with two years of eligibility to play for the Blue & Gold. He played in 81 games for the Rebels, averaging 10.2 minutes per game while scoring 217 total points and grabbing 106 total rebounds.
Â
"Sammy is a big addition to our frontcourt with a great motor that fits our style of play," Groce said. "He can stretch the floor with his 3-point shooting ability, attack the rim off the bounce and score in the post. Sammy's size, strength and physicality allow him to impact the glass on both ends of the floor. We are excited to have Sammy in our program."
Â
Hunter is originally from Nassau, Bahamas and was a member of the Bahamian National Team with current Zip, Garvin Clarke. Hunter averaged 11 points and six rebounds as the squad posted a 3-0 record in San Salvador, El Salvador to advance to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers. In addition, Hunter averaged 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in his first stint with the national team in a pair of exhibitions against ACC teams, including an 18-point performance against North Carolina.
