AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams are set to open the month of April traveling to the Northeast Ohio Tri-Meet hosted by Ashland on Saturday, April 2.

UP NEXT: The Zips will compete against Ashland and Kent State on Saturday at the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex: Ferguson Field/AU Track on the campus of Ashland University.

The men's hammer kicks off the day's festivities at 10:30 a.m. before action on the track commences at 2 p.m. with the men's 4x100 relay. A rolling schedule of events follows before the women's 4x400 relay concludes the meet.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2022 indoor season as the Zips were rated in the Event Squad rankings released on March 1, 2022, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index. The first outdoor rankings of the season will be released on April 4.

Akron ranked 12th nationally in the men's triple jump as well as rating among the top 20 in five different events.

The Zips also rated 14th in the women's pole vault, 15th in the men's 400 meters, 20th in the men's long jump and weight throw.

The Akron men and women are ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, in the latest Great Lakes Regional polls.

ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2022 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has nine student-athletes currently ranked in the top-30 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2022 outdoor campaign, led by junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio), who is third in the nation in the women's triple jump (44-4.75/13.53m).

Additionally, freshman Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) is eighth in the men's pole vault (17-6.50/5.35m), senior Hesham Eldesouky (Nasr City, Egypt) is 20th in the men's triple jump (50-11/15.52m), junior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) ranks 25th in the men's high jump (6-10.75/2.10m), freshman Fegor Clifford (Delta State, Nigeria) is 28th in the women's 400-meter hurdles (59.57), while the men's 4x400 relay squad of sophomore Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio), freshman Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio), sophomore Blake Lucius (Crestline, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) are rated 30th nationally (3:09.06).

CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips posted four top-five performances in program history to the record book a week ago led by a school-record mark of 44-4.75 (13.53m) in the women's triple jump by Jacqueline Pokuaah.

Senior Alyssa Thomas (Uniontown, Ohio) recorded the No. 3 time in outdoor program history crossing the line in 16:45.37 at the Texas Relays on March 24.

Additionally, Hunter Garretson and senior Jacob Ondash (Hiram, Ohio) added the Nos. 4 and marks, respectively, in the men's pole vault and 1,500 meters. Garretson equaled his career-high clearance of 17-6.50 (5.35m) in the men's pole vault at the Texas Relays on March 24, while Ondash crossed the line in the 1,500 meters in a career-best time of 3:47.83.

GARRETSON AND POKUAAH GARNER MAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS:
Hunter Garretson and Jacqueline Pokuaah were honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's and Women's Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday, March 30.

Pokuaah was recognized by the league for the second time this season, while Garretson notched his first award on the campaign. Overall, the Zips picked up weekly conference accolades for the sixth and seventh times, respectively, in 2022. Â
Garretson equaled a career-best mark of 17-6.50 (5.35m) to place fourth in the men's pole vault at the Texas Relays on Thursday, March 24. His effort matched the No. 4 mark in outdoor program history, while ranking as the No. 8 performance in the NCAA this season and top clearance in the MAC. Additionally, his mark equaled the second-best mark in the competition.

Pokuaah registered a school-record mark of 44-4.75 (13.53m) en route to winning the women's triple jump at the Texas Relays on Friday, March 25. Her performance stands as the No. 3 mark in the NCAA this season and bests the former school record of 42-7.50 (12.99m) set by Arianda Ramos Gandia in 2016. Her winning effort came on her fourth attempt of the competition, with each of her final five marks exceeding the previous school-record mark.
