Louisville, Ky. – The Akron Zips led early in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, but the Louisville Cardinals generated a series of big innings to claim a pair of wins at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Â
In the opening game, the Zips led 4-0 after two innings as freshman Cameron Benson collected four of the Zips nine total hits in a 4-of-5 performance with a two-run homerun, triple and four RBI. Louisville plated 11 runs in the fifth inning, three in the sixth and five in the seventh for a 20-6 win.
Â
In the nightcap, seniors Bryant Shellenbarger and Tate Wargo scattered three hits each in a 22-9 setback. Again Akron, held the early advantage 3-0 after two innings, but four runs in the bottom of the second inning by Louisville proved to be costly. The Cardinals added three in the fourth for a 8-3 lead, and Akron cut the lead to one run in the sixth with four runs. Wargo drove one run in with a single to centerfield and scored on a Nick Arrivo two-RBI single. Louisville used five hits and capitalized on an Akron fielding error for nine runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Zips will be back in action for the home and Mid-American Conference series opener at Skeeles Field against Toledo on March 11-13. Friday's series opener is scheduled for 3 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single 9-inning game are scheduled for noon starts.
