Akron Plates Two Runs in 11th (inn.) to Secure Comeback Win

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball team avoided a series sweep by scoring a pair of runs in the 11th inning for a come-from-behind 7-5 win of game two in Saturday's doubleheader against Eastern Michigan at Oestrike Stadium.

In the final game of the four-game MAC series, Akron (5-17, 5-7 MAC) fell behind 3-0 by the end of the third inning, but retaliated by scoring one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to tie the game 3-3. Eastern Michigan (8-13,4-4 MAC) regained a 5-3 lead by adding two runs in the seventh, but Akron plated a run in the eighth and ninth to force extra innings as the Zips rallied with two outs and received three consecutive hits to plate the tying run. In extras, Akron lit up the scoreboard first as the Zips earned a pair of free passes to start off the 11th inning. Freshman Ian Pennington (Batavia, N.Y.) battled at the plate and earned the initial base on balls while junior Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas) followed with walk, eventually placing runners at second and third with one out. Graduate student Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice flyout to rightfield, and senior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) recorded the second RBI of the inning with a base hit to the right side.

The Zips scattered 12 hits for their seven runs as Hara and Shellenbarger led the way with three hits each. Hara went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, two walks, and an RBI, while Shellenbarger was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Michael Sprockett (West Chester, Ohio) recorded his first-career homerun with a 2-0, solo-shot to right centerfield in the fifth inning for an RBI, and senior Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.) also drove in a run on a double to right centerfield.

Junior Brett Dietrich (Goshen, Ohio) earned the win in 4.2 innings of work, allowing no hits and no runs with eight strike outs and three walks in 18 batters faced.

The Zips opened the day with an 8-5 setback in game three of the series as Akron led 4-2 after four and a half innings of play. The Eagles tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning and captured the lead with two runs in the fifth. EMU added runs in the sixth and eight innings, while Akron plated a run in the seventh. The Zips recorded seven hits, while the home team recorded 11 hits.

Eastern Michigan swept Friday's doubleheader by scores of 10-9 and 18-6. In the series opener, Akron led early, taking a 2-0 advantage, but the Eagles tied the game with a two-run third inning. The Zips regained the lead in the fourth as Sprockett lead-off with a single and a Hara SAC fly plated the run, 3-2. EMU scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings to create a 10-3 advantage, and Akron's attempt at a comeback fell short. The Zips plated six runs in the ninth inning, but couldn't get the tying run on the bases. Akron loaded the bases with a single and three base on balls as Benson collected the initial RBI and an Arrivo RBI single kept the rally going. Shellenbarger grounded out while pushing the third run across the plate and Sprockett doubled for two RBI. Reinhart plated the final run of the inning with a ground out the third base.

Akron scored five runs iin the first inning of game two for a commanding 5-0 lead. The Eagles responded with 12 unanswered runs and tacked on six runs in the eighth for the lopsided victory.
