AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips baseball team scattered six hits in a 4-2 win over Northern Illinois on Sunday at Skeeles Field.

Akron (5-12, 4-4 MAC) scored two runs in the third inning and again in the sixth as senior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.), junior Kaito Hara (Houston, Texas) and freshman Michael Sprockett (West Chester, Ohio) recorded RBI. Wargo plated the first run in the third inning after Sprockett walked and senior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Freshman Ian Pennington (Batavia, N.Y.) moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Wargo scored Sprocket on a groundout to the shortstop. Hara followed with a triple to push Reinhart across the plate.

Graduate student Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and senior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) delivered back-to-back singles to open the sixth inning, and senior Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.) laid down the sacrifice bunt, setting the stage for Sprockett's 2RBI single to centerfield. Sprockett finished the day hitting 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, a run scored and two RBI.

The Zips pitching staff allowed two runs on four hits as senior Jackson Hickert (Hudson, Ohio) pitched three no-hit innings on a pitch count for the win. He faced 10 batters and struck out one. Junior Brett Dietrich (Goshen, Ohio) hurled the final 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two batters, including the final out of the game.

For the series, Sprockett (.556) had five hits and two RBI to lead the Zips' offense. Pennington (.300), Arrivo (.231), Wargo (.214), Shellenbarger (.200) and Cameron Benson (.188) all had three hits. Akron dropped the opening game 9-5 to the Huskies, but responded with a doubleheader split on Saturday. The Zips won the first double-dip game 3-1 and fell 8-2 in the nightcap.

Akron will be back in action in Ypsilanti, Mich. for a #MACtion series on Friday-Saturday, March 25-27. The series opens a 3 p.m. 9-inning contest on Friday followed by Saturday's noon doubleheader and Sunday's noon 9-inning finale.
