Magnus Cup Invitational: Zips Sweep Day 2, Gatrall Sets Record

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team won all of the swimming events on the second day of the Magnus Cup Invitational, collecting 13 medals en route to a 1,072.5-point total to take a commanding lead at Busbey Natatorium on Friday.

The Zips collected seven gold medals along with four bronze and a pair of silvers, while junior Madelyn Gatrall set a new meet record and captured a team-best four gold medals. Gatrall set the new meet and pool standard in the 100-yard backstroke as Akron swept the top three spots. Gatrall flew to a lifetime-best 52.61 time and replaced the 52.75 Magnus Cup and pool records set by Daisy Platts in 2021. Weronika Gorecka placed second and Abigail Daniel finished third with 54.66 and 54.89 times, respectively.

Akron opened the day by claiming first and second in the 200-yard medley relay. Gatrall (24.85), Andrea Fischer (27.99), Daniel (23.50) and Rachel Schiffli (22.86) posted a 1:39.20 time for the gold, followed by the runner-up squad with a 1:40.52, featuring Rebecca Reid (25.44), Madeline Dyer (28.09), Gorecka (23.71) and Olivia Derodes (23.28).

Astrid Halvorsen (4:20.97) registered the Zips second win in the 400-yard individual medley, while Kendall Craig (4:21.94) and Gail Workman (4:23.29) placed third and fourth, respectively. The 100-yard butterfly saw Daniel climb on top of the podium with a 52.33 time and Gorecka (54.64) earned bronze.

Gatrall's first individual win came in the 200-yard freestyle as she stopped the timer at 1:49.06, and Fischer captured gold in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:02.59 time, followed by Dyer (1:03.37) for the bronze.

Akron wrapped-up the second day of the meet with a first-place showing in the 800-yard freestyle relay as Gorecka (1:51.00), Daniel (1:53.02), Gatrall (1:49.94) and Workman (1:51.32) flew to a 7:25.28 time.
Akron currently leads the women's field by 472.5 points as runner-up Duquesne is second in team scoring with 599.5 points. Prelims for the final day of the Magnus Cup Invitational are slated for a 9 a.m. start.
