Magnus Cup Invitational: Zips Lead After Day 1, Gatrall Earns Three Gold Medals

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team registered 375.5 points en route to a 100-point lead after five women's events at the Magnus Cup Invitational hosted by Cleveland State at Busbey Natatorium on Thursday.

The Zips medaled in all five events, collecting four golds, one silver and one bronze. The 200-yard freestyle relay team claimed the first medal as Rachel Schiffli (23.59), Abigail Daniel (22.38), Olivia Derodes (23.41) and  Madelyn Gatrall (22.58) stopped the timer at 1:31.96 for Akron's first win.

In the second women's race of the day, Astrid Halvorsen and Abigail Workman finished second and third, respectively, clocking a 4:55.40 and 4:56.22 times in the 500-yard freestyle. Gatrell topped the podium in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:01.15, and grabbed the third gold of the day in the 50-yard freestyle (23.19). Â

Shortly after back-to-back wins by Gatrall, the 400-yard medley relay team captured the Zips' fourth gold medal as Rebecca Reid (55.47), Madeline Dyer (1:02.98), Rachel Sabotin (55.45) and Derodes (51.72) clocked a 3:45.62 time .

Akron currently leads the women's field by 100.5 points as runner-up Duquesne is second in team scoring.
