Zips Enter Final Round as Runner-Up, Four Players Inside Top 15

Port Clinton, Ohio – The Akron Zips golf team currently ranks second overall after 36 holes of the Rocket Classic hosted by Toledo at the Par-72, 6,118-yard Catawba Island Club on Monday.

The Zips enter the final round seven strokes behind the team leaders, Rutgers 305-299 - 604 (+28), as four Zips rank inside the Top 15 golfers. Akron fired rounds of 309 (+21) and 302 (+14) for a 611 (+35) team total led by freshman Abbi Fleiner (Reno, Nev.).

Fleiner carded a 78 (+6) opening round and bounced back with a 1-under par 71 second round for a 149 (+5) total. She climbed six spots with the 1-under performance to finish fourth overall after 36 holes with three birdies and an eagle on hole No. 17, a 360-yard par-4.

Sophomore Daphne van Son (Vlijmen, Netherlands) followed in scoring for the Zips with rounds of 76 (+4) and 77 (+5) for a 153 (+9) effort. Van Son is currently tied for seventh overall, while senior Jacinta Pikunas (Youngstown, Ohio) trails by one stroke (+10, 74-80 - 154) and ranks 10^th overall. Junior Jessica Hahn (Canton, Ohio) is just outside the Top 10 and tied for 11^th overall with an 11-over par 81-74 – 155 ledger. Rounding out the Zips' scoring were freshmen Avery Wright (Jackson, Ohio) and Hridhika Vora (Mumbai, Maharashtra) with 168 (+24) and 175 (+31) scores, respectively.

The final round of the Rocket Classic is scheduled for a shotgun start at 9 a.m. with Fleiner and van Son starting on holes No. 1-2, while Pikunas (18), Hahn (17) and Wright (16) follow. Vora will start on hole No. 12. Fans can follow the action via GolfStat Live Scoring.
