AKRON, Ohio- Redshirt senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) recorded a triple-double on Saturday afternoon, totaling 26 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 79-69 victory over Bowling Green at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Dawson's triple-double was the second in program history as the first was set by Megan Barilla, who had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over UCF in 2015.
Dawson had plenty of help offensively, as freshman forward Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) (12 points) sophomore guard Annika Corcoran (Painesville, Ohio)(11) and junior forward Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) (11) all scored in double figures for Akron.
The Zips (5-4, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) made their return home a winning one thanks to hot shooting (51.9 percent), Dawson's all-around performance and a defense that forced 17 Bowling Green turnovers and converted those turnovers into 19 points.
The decisive stretch for the contest came in the third period as Akron faced a determined Bowling Green comeback and responded in style to dispatch their MAC rivals.
After trailing by as many as 11 in the first half, the Falcons (6-6, 1-2 MAC) rallied to tie the game at 49-all midway through the third quarter. The Zips responded with a 9-0 run to regain control, with a key corner triple from redshirt sophomore guard Layne Ferrell with 1:14 remaining punctuating the surge.
Akron found success in the early going by pounding the ball inside to Brewer, whose six first-quarter points helped get the offense rolling and created space for Dawson, who had a game-high nine points in the opening frame and made all four of her field goal attempts in the quarter.
An 11-1 run midway through the second quarter allowed the Zips to turn a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead (30-22) that grew to 11 moments later. Junior Rachel Martindale's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pinpoint shooting from the perimeter fueled the run as two 3-pointers gave the Akron offense a boost.
Corcoran replicated Martindale's ace marksmanship later in the period with two triples of her own to extend the Akron advantage. She tacked on a free throw for a four-point play after the first long ball and had eight points before the break. Overall, it was Dawson who dominated the half, recording 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and a steal, propelling her team to a 42-36 halftime lead.
Sophomore guard Nyla led Bowling Green with 15 points and Hampton junior guard Elissa Brett added 13 in the loss.
The Zips will travel to southwest Ohio to take on the Miami RedHawks in their next contest, a Jan. 12 MAC matchup that tips at 2 p.m. at Millett Hall in Oxford. The game can be seen on ESPN+ and heard on WHLO 640-AM.
