OXFORD, Ohio- The Akron Zips outscored Miami (4-7, 0-2 MAC), 42-24 inside the paint, en route to a 66-53 victory over the RedHawks on Wednesday night at Millett Hall.
Â
Redshirt senior Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W Va.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Dawson had plenty of help offensively as three other Zips scored in double-figures. Freshman Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) scored a career-high 17 points, while junior Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) and senior Kendall Miller (Akron, Ohio) added 10 each.
Â
The Zips (6-4, 3-1 MAC) won their third-straight league game for the first time since 2019.
Â
Both teams struggled to put down points in the opening quarter as the score stayed tied at seven with two minutes remaining. Miami closed the first frame on a jumper with four seconds remaining and led 11-9 heading into the second quarter.
Â
Akron found success in the second quarter by pounding the ball inside to Miller whose eight second-quarter points helped the Zips get the offense rolling and highlighted a 10-1 scoring run. A 9-2 run at the end of the second quarter allowed the Zips to turn a two-point deficit into a nine-point lead (32-23). Bass and Miller's ability to score in the paint fueled the run and gave the Akron offense a boost, as the Zips closed the opening half outscoring the RedHawks, 20-10 in the paint.
Â
Dawson got the Zips perimeter shooting going as she drained back-to-back three pointers that highlighted a 7-0 run to extend Akron's lead to 45-27 midway through the third frame. Akron continued to dominate offensively and finished the third quarter shooting 10-of-15 from the floor (66.7 percent) and adding 16 points from the paint, eight coming from Bass.
Â
The RedHawks battled back from a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter and used a 10-2 scoring run over six minutes that closed the Zips lead to 57-46 with 4:37 remaining. Miami forced nine turnovers and scored 14 points off the Zips' miscues to trim Akron's lead to eight (61-53), but the Zips held on for the victory.
Â
Miami's Peyton Scott led the RedHawks with 13, while Ivy Wolf added 11 points.
Â
Akron returns home on Saturday, Jan. 15 as the Zips host Ball State at 2 p.m. at James A. Rhodes Arena. The game can be seen on ESPN3 and heard on 640 WHLO AM. Live stats are also available at GoZips.Com.
