AKRON, Ohio - In celebration of our storied tradition of women's sports, The University of Akron athletics department is proud to announce a fundraising initiative to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX. To honor the commitment of our female student-athletes both past and present, we are seeking 50 supporters to make a gift of $900 or more to enhance our women's sports programs.
Â
"Title IX allows our female student-athletes an opportunity to pursue their academic and professional dreams. I truly believe they are an asset to our community and their impact on the future of Akron Athletics is endless," said Director of Athletics Charles Guthrie.
Â
The landmark legislation set out to ensure equal educational opportunities regardless of gender allowed more women and girls to participate in athletics programs, earn scholarships and attend college. Nationally, more than 216,000 female athletes compete in the NCAA and Akron is home to 10 women's programs that account for 197 student-athletes.
Â
Your commitment to this initiative allows the athletic department to continue offering the best experiences to our female student-athletes and ensures they have the best opportunities to succeed in competition, in the classroom and in the future. Supporters can make their contribution at www.gozips.com/give/title9 or by texting Title9 to 91999.
