AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's volleyball team is scheduled to open its 30-match 2021 season with four tournaments consisting of 12 matches before the start of Mid-American Conference play, as seventh-year head Coach Tom Hanna announced the schedule on Wednesday.

"Our non-conference schedule will have us ready for the challenge that the MAC season will bring," Hanna said. "I believe it's our toughest non-conference schedule over my time here and look forward to kicking off the season later this month."

Akron volleyball is scheduled to open the 2021 season at the DoubleTree Youngstown Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27-28, at the Beeghly Center hosted by Youngstown State. The Zips' season opener is slated for 2 p.m. against St. Francis (Pa.) on Friday followed by a 7 p.m. match against the host, Youngstown State. The following day (Aug. 28), the Blue and Gold shares the court with Duquesne at Noon.

Akron is slated to travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the second tournament of the season as the Virginia Cavaliers host Akron, Winthrop and William & Mary on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 3-4 at UVA's Memorial Gymnasium. Akron and Winthrop are scheduled to open the tournament at 11:30 a.m. and the Zips return to battle the Cavaliers later in the evening at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Akron will face William & Mary at 11:30 a.m.

Akron continues its road swing at the DePaul Invitational and Maryland Tournament before the 18-match league schedule begins at James A. Rhodes Arena.

On Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11, DePaul hosts Akron, Penn and Oakland at McGrath-Phillips Arena in Chicago, Ill. The Zips are slated to play Penn at noon and DePaul at 7 p.m. on Friday and Oakland on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The following week on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18, Akron travels to College Park, Md. as the Maryland Terrapins host Columbia, Stony Brook and the Zips at Xfinity Center Pavilion. Akron opens the tournament against the host Maryland on Friday at 7 p.m. followed by a pair of matches against Columbia at 10:30 a.m. and Stony Brook at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

After 12 matches on the road, the Zips will be primed to host the defending MAC Champions Bowling Green for a pair of matches at the JAR for the season and MAC home openers on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25. On Friday at 7 p.m., the Zips and the Falcons open league play followed by the second match on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The road to the MAC tournament continues in Oxford, Ohio as the Zips square-off against the Miami RedHawks at Millett Hall on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1. The series opener is slated for a 7 p.m. first serve on Friday followed by a 6 p.m. initial tap on Saturday.

Akron will be back defending its home court against Ball State and Toledo on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9. On Friday, the Zips host the Cardinals at 7 p.m. before the Rockets visit the JAR on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tilt.

Akron also has a pair of midweek #MACtion matches against their travel partner, Buffalo Bulls. The first installment takes place in Buffalo, N.Y. at Alumni Arena on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. The two teams are scheduled to do battle again in the season finale at the JAR on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.

Prior to the final regular season match of the season, the Zips host area-rival Kent State for the Crystal Clinic Orthopeadic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge series on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15-16 at 7 and 5 p.m., respectively.

The Zips follow with four straight road matches, beginning in Athens, Ohio against Ohio University on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22-23. Match times are to be determined.

The following week, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30, the Zips travel to Michigan to play a pair of cross-divisional opponents. The Central Michigan Chippewas host the Zips on Friday at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant followed by a match in Ypsilanti against the Eastern Michigan Eagles on Saturday at the EMU Convocation Center. Both matches start times are to be determined.

For the final homestand and senior weekend, Akron hosts Northern Illinois. On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5-6, the Huskies and the Zips wrap-up regular season play at Rhodes Arena at 7 and 5 p.m.

The final weekend series is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12-13 at University Arena against Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich. The matches are set for 6 p.m. and 3 p.m.
