Kent, Ohio – Junior Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) blasted three homeruns and recorded six RBI to lead the Akron Zips to a 9-6 win over rival Kent State in the Zips season finale on Tuesday night at Olga Mural Field at Schoonover Stadium.
Â
Goulet went 3-for-4 at the plate with two solo homeruns and a grand slam while scoring four runs to tie the most homeruns hit in a game in Akron program history – Doug McNulty also had a three-homerun game in 2008.
Â
Goulet sent the first homerun over the centerfield wall on a 0-1 count in the second inning to lift the Zips to a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Goulet fell behind 0-2 in the count and sent the third pitch over the left field wall to lift Akron to a 3-1 advantage. The home team added a run in the bottom half of the inning, and in the fifth inning, Goulet cleared the playing surface for a third time, this time with the bases loaded. With two outs and a 1-1 count, Goulet used left center field as the target, plating senior Austin Domer (Orrville, Ohio), senior Connor Regan (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) and junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) for a 7-2 lead.
Â
Domer, Regan, and junior Dominick Trevino (Edmond, Okla.) followed with two-hit performances. Domer issued a pair of singles and a run scored, while Regan and Trevino each recorded a double and single. Regan scored a run and Trevino collected two RBI. Also recording hits for Akron were juniors Justin Barr (Pensacola, Fla.) and Zac Granger (Elmira, N.Y.).
Â
Akron (15-36, 8-32 MAC) added runs in the third and seventh innings. In the third frame, Akron scored one run on two hits as junior Tate Wargo (Benld, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a sacrifice flyout from Reinhart.
Â
After Kent State (27-25, 20-16 MAC) responded with three runs in the fifth inning and added one run in the sixth inning to cut the Zips' advantage to one run (7-6), Akron retaliated for a pair of runs. In the seventh inning, junior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) reached on a Golden Flashes' fielding error and Goulet was handed a free pass. With runners on first and second, Trevino delivered a double to left field and plated both runs.
Â
Starting pitcher John Creel (Huntersville, N.C.) earned the decision, throwing three innings and allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts to move to 4-3 on the season, while senior pitcher Mark Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned the save in three innings of work. Meyer struck out two batters and allowed two hits without relinquishing a run.
Â
The 9-6 win over Kent State marks the end of the 2021 campaign for Akron baseball.
