AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron junior swimmer Andrea Fischer (Oak Grove, Minn.) posted a lifetime-best 2:32.63 time in the women's 200-meter breaststroke to qualify for WAVE I of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials set for June 4-7, 2021.
Â
Over the weekend, Fischer competed at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Cassville, West Virginia and just missed the U.S. Olympic Team Trial standard in the 100-meter breaststroke. She flew to a career-best time of 1:11.02 to win the A-Final, but fell just three hundredths of a second short of qualifying – The U.S. Olympic Team Trial standard in the 100 Breast is 1:10.99.
Â
Fischer followed with a second career-best performance, this time in the 200 Breast as she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. In the 200 Breast prelims, Fischer clocked a 2:35.53 time which was three 3:38 faster than her personal-best entry time. In the finals, she nearly cut three more seconds from her time, winning the 200 Breast with the career-best 2:32.63 mark. Fischer opened the race with a 50-meter time of 34.88 and completed the first 100-meters in 1:14.15. She continued cruising through the water at a 39.55 pace and stopped the timer in the final 50-meter stretch with a 38.93 time for a 1:18.48 100-meter split – The U.S. Olympic Team Trial qualifying standard in the 200 Breast is 2:33.29.
Â
USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States, in partnership with the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and the Omaha Sports Commission announced a revised plan and schedule for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming.
Â
The Olympic Trials will be divided into two competitions, with Wave I on June 4-7, 2021 and Wave II on June 13-20, 2021. Wave II will continue to serve as the sole qualifier for pool swimmers on the U.S. Olympic Team for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
Â
A thorough evaluation of the past five Olympic Trials (2000-2016) was undertaken to review what seeds entering the Olympic Trials previously qualified for the Olympic Team, and the Olympic Trials finals. Given this and other data, USA Swimming will adjust the current Trials time standard in each event to the current 41st seeded time, and athletes who have met or bettered that time will automatically advance to Wave II of the Trials.
Â
These newly adjusted Wave II time standards also factor in a possible modest growth to 50-60 athletes per event in the four months leading into the Olympic Trials, generating a final field of approximately 750 total athletes.
Â
This new Wave II standard was made effective on January 28, 2021 and run through the close of qualifying for the Olympic Trials on May 30, 2021. Athletes who have already achieved the revised time standard do not have to requalify.
