AKRON, Ohio – The Akron and the Ball State needed extra innings to decide a winner of game one as the Cardinals swept a doubleheader at Skeeles Field on Saturday afternoon.
Â
In game one of the doubleheader, Akron (9-15, 3-12 MAC) battled the league-leading Cardinals to a 2-2 stalemate after seven innings of play, needing two extra innings to decide the winner as Ball State (18-9, 9-2 MAC) scored two runs in the ninth for a 4-2 win.
Â
The Cardinals started the scoring, claiming a two-run advantage by the middle of the second inning. The Cardinals scored an unearned run in the first inning followed by another run on two hits in the second inning.
Â
Akron responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game. Junior Bradley Goulet (Cottage Grove, Minn.) started the rally with a single to the right side and junior Cameron Tilly (Canberra, Australia) blasted an RBI double down the right field line. Junior Jerry Reinhart (Batavia, N.Y.) followed with a single to right field and junior Bryant Shellenbarger (Mount Vernon, Ohio) drove in the second run on a fielder's choice.
Â
Both teams had opportunities to push runs across the plate, but great defensive plays halted potential scoring bursts as the Cardinals delivered 11 hits in the game. The Cardinals opened the ninth inning with a double down the left field line by Cade Fitzpatrick. A second hit and a pair of sacrifices, a bunt and a flyout, generated the final two runs of the game as BSU claimed game one. Chayce McDermott earned the win, throwing eight complete innings, allowing four hits and two runs while collecting six strikeouts with three walks. Andre Orselli was credited with a save.
Â
In game two, Ball State scored five runs in the second inning and added one run in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, while plating two runs in the sixth for a commanding 10-0 win. The Cardinals recorded nine hits, and Akron distributed six hits with catcher junior Josh Beck (Ottawa Lake, Mich.) leading the way with a 2-for3 effort.
Â
The final game of the series is scheduled for noon on Sunday at Skeeles Filed. Fans can follow the action on Zips Digital Network live stream or via live stats on GoZips.com. The Cardinals lead the series 3-0.
