Zips’ Duo Leads Akron to Season-Best Score

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 12th-rated University of Akron rifle squad registered a season-best shoulder-to-shoulder score of 4678 in its showdown with No. 7 Air Force and No. 13 Ohio State on Monday, Feb. 8.
The Falcons finished atop the standings with a score of 4694, followed by the Zips (4678) and Buckeyes (4673).
Senior Wyatt Openshaw (Parkton, Md.) and freshman Kayla Andreoli (Washington, Pa.) paced the way for Akron. In smallbore, Andreoli registered a career-best score of 584, while Openshaw trailed just behind her with a 582 scorecard.
In the air rifle, Openshaw turned up the heat firing an impressive 594, one point shy of a school-record mark, which landed him ahead of Andreoli, who posted a score of 590.
The supporting cast came in the form of junior Andre Gross (Webster, N.Y.), who registered a score of 581 in the smallbore. Additionally, in the air rifle, junior Jeanne Haverhill (Coopersburg, Pa.) did well with a 588 score, which was supported by the entire remaining squad of Zips firing in the 580's.
The Zips will welcome No. 12 North Carolina State and No. 13 Ohio State to the Pinn Shooting Range on Saturday, Feb. 13, for an 8 a.m. match.
