Central Michigan Claims Series with a 3-1 Second Match Win

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Akron Zips women's volleyball team fell 3-1 by scores of 25-23, 25-6, 16-25 and 25-21 on the road to Central Michigan at McGuirk, Arena on Friday afternoon.

Senior LS Alexis Adleta (West Chester, Ohio) and junior LS Jen Durra (Painesville, Ohio) led the Zips with 10 kills each, while senior RS Shelby Fulmer (Perrysburg, Ohio) tallied eight. Junior MB Megan Kelly (Lakewood, Ill.) and junior RS Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) added six and five kills , respectively, as both individuals led the squad in blocks. Ochaya denied a team best three attacks while Kelly tabulated two blocks.

Senior S Taylor Kuruzovich (Port Matilda, Pa.) and senior S Emily Weigand (Burton, Ohio) supported the Zip' offensive attack with 18 and 17 assists, respectively. Weigand, who leads the league in service aces, served up three of the Zips' four aces.

Senior DS Taylor Sharrits (Concord, Ohio) anchored the Zips' ground defense with 17 digs while Adleta and Durra supported the effort with double-digit digs with 16 and 10.

In the opening set, Central Michigan scored the first two points and held an early 5-1 advantage, but the Zips (3-9, 3-9 MAC) battled back for a 7-7 tie. Akron tallied the first point of set two, but the Chippewas (7-5, 7-5 MAC) rallied with nine unanswered points for a 9-1 advantage. CMU continued to put points on the board in bunches, outscoring Akron 16-5 the rest of the way.

The Zips claimed the third set 25-16 as Durra led the way with four kills. Adleta and Ochaya added three kills each, while Ochaya recorded two blocks and Kelly and junior MB Hannah Yaconis (Batavia, Ill.) each had one. With the set tied 9-9 Akron used a 6-0 run, highlighted by three services aces from Weigand. Durra and Fulmer also added kills for two of those six points. The Zips outscored Central Michigan 10-7 the rest of the way for the win.

The match ended with a closely plaid fourth set that featured eight tied scores and five lead changes. The two teams traded points until the home team put down consecutive points with the score tied 12-all. CMU increased the lead to four points with an 18-14 advantage, and eventually secured the match with a 25-21 result.

The Zips continue conference play next weekend on the road, battling Northern Illinois on Thursday and Friday, March 4-6 at the NIU Convocation Center.
